Besiktas Continues Winning Streak
By
www.fibaeurope.com
Besiktas remained
unbeaten in the EuroChallenge with a 78-70 home win over BK Pardubice in Group K on Tuesday. Making a commitment to getting
the ball inside to their big men, Besiktas' game-plan worked with Erwin
Dudley particularly effective. The 2.01m center hardly put a foot wrong, making nine of his 10 shots around the basket
and scoring a game-high 22 points. Dudley was so effective
that coach Ergin Ataman played Pops Mensah-Bonsu just 13 minutes. Carlos Arroyo made his EuroChallenge bow with Besiktas and
had 17 points, four assists and five boards. Besiktas did not have it all their own way against a determined Pardubice side
that had to win its last two games in the Regular Season to reach this stage of the competition. Jan Slowiak's side trailed
by as many as 13 midway through the second quarter but continued to fight and closed the gap to six before going to half-time
trailing, 44-37. Dagli had 14 points at the break to lead all scorers. Pardubice came out all guns blazing at the start of
the third quarter with a Maurice Hampton three-ball, a Corey Muirhead jumper and Petr Bohacik shot from the arc putting them
in front at 47-46.
The high-flying Muirhead (17pts, 8rbs) then caught an alley-oop pass from Hampton and scored to push the
advantage to 51-48 with 3:59 to play in the quarter to cause some unease in the Besiktas arena. The hosts went back in front
after baskets from Zoran Erceg (13 points) and Arroyo, but Bohacik knifed his way into the lane, caught a pass by Michal Carneckı
and dunked with authority to knot the game at 53-53. Dudley
answered with a dunk and David Hawkins scored the next four points as Besiktas finished the quarter on a 6-0 run for a 59-53
lead. Ataman's team again stretched their advantage to 13 but didn't slam the door shut. A pair of Bohacik free-throws, which
took his points haul to 20, reduced the arrears to 74-69 with 2:26 to play and Pardubice had an opportunity to get even closer
but Hampton missed from long range.
Dudley followed with a lay-up to extend the
lead to 76-69. With Pardubice attempting to keep the score close in the final minute, Bohacik was hurt while diving for a
loose ball and had to leave the contest. Besiktas got a lay-up from Arroyo in the final seconds to seal an eight-point win.
Marcus Arnold had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with his seven points for Pardubice.

third and the last periods to seal the victory. Besiktas Milangaz could not score in the last two minutes but did not mind
about it.

12 points and 7 assists and Ahmad Nivens also scored 12. Taylor helped Mons jump out to a promising 7-13 start, but a David
Hawkins triple and points on consecutive possessions from Williams closed the gap. Nivens was next to lift Mons only to see
Besiktas bounce back on a Kemp triple to tie it and then finish the first quarter ahead 22-21 after a Williams three. The
teams traded scores for the first few minutes of the second quarter until – with the score tied 28-28 – Besiktas
reeled off 7 straight points. Even so, A.J. Slaughter helped Mons climb right back, though a Dudley
tip-in at the buzzer made it 41-37 at the half.
Kemp started the second half with a pair of triples and
even with Mons hitting shots too, the Besiktas offensive onslaught proved too much. A Erceg triple gave the hosts a double-digit
lead, Hawkins added basket-plus-foul and Williams spotted Kemp on the break to make it 61-46. Nivens helped close the game
to 63-52 by the end of the third quarter. Mons continued its late push with 7 quick points early in the fourth quarter to
get within 6. But after a Besiktas timeout, Dudley scored from the line and Kemp nailed a triple

2/26/2010- Interview with Eurocupbasketball.com
By Javier
Gancedo
Just when it looked like Turk Telekom was facing an early exit in this year's
Eurocup Last 16, the Turkish powerhouse last week pulled off a critical, life-giving road win against previously undefeated
Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade, Serbia. Telekom started Group L with a 0-3 record and trailed 58-42 against Zvezda midway through
the third quarter, but rallied to stay alive in the competition. Telekom's signature player, power forward Erwin Dudley, had
as much reason as anyone to celebrate his team's change of fortune. In his fifth season with the team, Dudley is a fan favorite
in Ankara and even got Turkish citizenship recently. Dudley's consistently high level of play is part of the reason Telekom
is still in the race to reach the Quarterfinals He is averaging 11.9 points on a league-best 29-of-30 free throws, and leads
Telekom with 6.5 rebounds so far in this Eurocup season. Now that Telekom found its momentum, Dudley will make sure he and
his teammates do their best to advance. "We managed to play our best basketball at the right time," Dudley told Eurocupbasketball.com.
"For us, being able to go there and get a win in an unbelievable way showed us that everything can be done if we play well.
Our next opponents are going to have a lot of troubles against us."
Hello, Erwin. Congratulations on the big
win in Belgrade, coming back from 16 points down in the third quarter. How did you find the right rhythm to win that game?
"Thanks a lot. We played together and were in that situation before. We let up but managed to play together as a team
and fight back. We got the energy to continue the fight and knew that we needed to win to stay alive. Everything went well
in the fourth quarter and pulled out a great victory for us. This is a very big win for us. We lost our first Last 16 game
in Gran Canaria with chances to win it, then came back home to play in Ankara twice and lost both of them. We needed to come
back starting with big, big road win like this. We managed to play our best basketball at the right time. For us, being able
to go there and get a win in an unbelievable way showed us that everything can be done if we play well. Our next opponents
are going to have a lot of troubles against us. They are a great team, but so are we and like I said, this is a great victory
for us."
Telekom is one of the most experienced teams in the competition. How important is that experience
for the two must-win games left?
"Well, we've got Demond Mallet, whose had already won the Eurocup in the
past. That is a big thing for us, too. He talks about a different types of things his team - DKV Joventut - went through that
winning season, being together as a team and small things on the court. We now have all of our players back from injuries
and like you said, this is a very experienced team. We now we have to go out there and give our best every night."
Your
next game is against Gran Canaria, a direct opponent in the fight to reach the next round. Having played already against them,
what do you have to do to beat them?
"We have to play our type of basketball. This is what we did in our
road game against them but they beat us by eight points. We just have to play basketball as a team, just come out, compete
and play hard. If we just go out there and play basketball, I am sure we will have a very good chance to beat Gran Canaria."
After a knee injury towards the end of your college career, you sat out a full season before coming to play
in Europe, first in Israel. Were there times during your recovery that you doubted your ability to make a comeback?
"I ended up having two surgeries. I had a serious injury, as I broke my kneecap and it was the type of injury I had
never heard of. I did one surgery that did not go well and ended up having a second surgery. When I went to rehab after the
first surgery, my knee was still bothering me, it didn't feel right. I had to go in and do another surgery. Once I did it,
everything started to fall into place. Once I went into the second surgey, I managed to come back and play basketball."
Did
that injury change your game in any way and make you a different player?
"It did help me a lot. I looked
at basketball differently. I have never took basketball for granted since that moment. I see every game as if it is my last
one, so I have to go out there and do my best. I am more aware of the different type of injuries and how to take care of your
body. I understand that and have worked harder on my body, especially on my flexibility. Getting injured ended up helping
me in a lot of ways. I wasn't aware of all these things before it happened."
This is your fifth season with
Turk Telekom. What do you like about the club and the city to keep you there for so many years?
"I have been
blessed to be here for five years. I haven't had a problem in all the time I have been here. My wife likes it here, we have
friends... we just enjoy it in Ankara. The club is also a good place to work, so everything is positive. We like it here and
enjoy ourselves, so there has been no reason to change."
You seem to have found a home in Ankara, even getting
Turkish citizenship this season. Did you expect to stay so long when you first went there?
"Actually, I came
here from Israel, were I played for one year. At first, I signed a one-year deal, so I didn't expect to be here for so long.
I liked the club a lot and they liked they way I performed, so I extended my contract for two more years. Once my second contract
was about to finish, we sat down again, discussed it and ended up signing for two more years. I try to come out and produce,
people like me here... So this is why I signed back-to-back contracts."
After three years in the competition
and seeing that Telekom is alive in the race to make it to the Quarterfinal, what would it mean for you to keep fighting to
win the title?
"It would be very big for us, especially for the club. I don't think that the club has made
it to the Quarterfinals of any European competition. I think it would also be big for Turkey. We have to perform well, especially
now that Galatasaray has no chance to advance. We have a chance and have to do our best in the next two games, give everything
we have on the court."

12/2/2008 - Telekom is 2-0 in Eurocup
The first game of the season in Ankara, Turkey was a first-class thriller that hosts Turk
Telekom managed to take in the final steps of the game by 70-64 against Panellinios BC. The game was balanced throughout the
40 minutes with both teams leading the score in turns, and trends marked by quick scoring bursts that put either team in command.
In the final plays, Ivan Radenovic stepped up for the guests but the hosts we ice cold from the free throw line hitting their
last 10 shots to secure the win.
The
win lifts Turk Telekom to a 2-0 record to lead Group D, while Panellinios drops to 0-2 and, with such a short regular season,
needs to start winning badly. Erwin Dudley led the winners with his 20 points, Michael Wright added
17, Rodney Blakney had 13 and Kennedy Winston posted 11, four of them key free throws in the last minutes. For Panellinios,
Radenovic had 18 points and Stevan Nadjfeji added 12.
Asim Pars opened the game for Turk Telekom but soon, a 0-7 burst
by Panellinios capped by Stevan Nadjfeji's basket allowed the guests to pull away by 2-7. Erwin Dudley
woke up for the hosts with his six straight points to make it an 8-9 game. Tutku Acik's three and a new Dudley
basket allowed the hosts to tie the game again, 13-13 as Nadjfeji was excelling also in offense for Panellinios. Thanks
to good percentages in 2-point shooting and four straight points by Michael Wright though, the first quarter ended falling
on the hosts' side again, 17-12.
Ivan
Radenovic's five points starting the second quarter gave some air to Panellinios, now trailing by 21-19, and Nadjfeji was
soon up to his 10th point to turn the game around again for the guests, 23-31, completing a 2-12 run. Turk Telekom was struggling
from the arc at 1 of 8 while Panellinios was also winning the battle under the boards. The lead for the guests went up to
double digits when Manolis Papamakarios hit two free throws, 25-35, but the hosts reacted with a final 8-2 thanks to Wright's
free throws to reach the break with a 33-37 Panellinios edge.
Five points by Rodney Blakney launched Turk Telekom
again and the hosts re-gaines the lead starting the third period, 40-39, after Kennedy Winston's basket. Winston himself blasted
a bomb from downtown to keep forging Turk Telekom a slim but solid lead. Panellinios kept looking inside to stay in the game
as Djuro Ostojic hit the lay-up to stay within 3 points, 53-50 for Turk Telekom as Panellinios was still leading under the
boards.
However,
the guests kept insisting from the three-point line and the shots didn't want to go in now, and their steals - turnovers ratio
was standing at -11 at this point, but despite all the negative signs, Radenovic fed Papamakarios to score the last basket
of the third quarter to leave a tight 53-52 score after 30 minutes. Dudley scored to keep Turk
Telekom ahead but Radenovic's three first tied the game at 55-55, and later, Nadjfeji re-appeared for a new Panellinios lead.
The
game entered the last four minutes with a 56-57 and both teams committing mistakes in offense as pressure started to push
hard. Wright and Blakney stepped up again for the hosts with four points in a row combined that forced Panellinios' timeout
with two minutes to go and a 60-57 Turk Telekom edge.
The
stop was good enough for the guests in general and Radenovic in particular, as he racked up five straight points of his own,
including a three-point play, to put his team ahead again, 60-62, but Wright was solid from the charity line to tie the deal
again. Nadjfeji fouled out with less than two minutes to go and Blakney hit two free throws to tie the game again, 64-64.
Soon,
Georgios Kalaitzis fouled on Winston, who hit both free throws again, and Blakney did the same again for 68-64 as Panellinios'
time was running out. A final timeout however, didn't change things as another trip by Winston to the line sealed the deal
for the hosts, as the fans celebrated a thrilling win.
11/10/2008 - Telekom Is Still Undefeated
Turk Telekom also remained unbeaten by trashing Kepez Belediye 58-82 on the
road. The visitors made a thunderous start, with Serkan Erdogan, Chris Lang and Erwin Dudley scoring
en route to a 13-25 lead at the end of the first quarter. Telekom nursed that lead to stay ahead 26-38 at halftime. The tough
defense of Telekom in the third period and the some fast-break baskets scored by Erdogan, Michael Wright and Rod Blakney gave
the Ankara side a 34-61 lead.
It was a question of time for both sides in the last quarter as Telekom increased
the lead to 29 points and won the game 58-82. Erdogan scored 21 points on 5-for-7 three-point shooting and Wright and Pars
added 10 points each. Torrell Martin scored 19 and Robert Traylor had 12 for Kepez in defeat.
10/28/2008 - Telekom is 2-0
Turk Telekom used a 13-25 fourth-quarter charge to snatch a 64-71 road victory
against Pinar Karsiyaka in Izmir. The game was tied at 17-17 at the end of the first period, before Pinar Karsiyaka’s
Leon Williams and Ralph Mims took charge to give the hosts a 37-33 halftime lead.
Karsiyaka persisted against the pressure of Telekom also in the third period
and remained ahead 51-46. But Telekom strengthened its defensive power in tha last quarter and became more effective on offence
with Serkan Erdoğan outside and Michael Wright and Erwin Dudley inside along to surge for the win.
Wright had his best game since his return from a long injury to score 22 points and grab 6 rebounds. Dudley
had 17 points and Erdogan finished with 15 points.

10/12/2008 - Turk Telekom Wins President's
Cup
Turk Telekom won the first trophy of the season in Turkey by beating Fenerbahce Ulker 83-79
to capture the President's Cup at home in Ankara Ataturk Arena.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul was on hand along with 6,000 fans to witness the triumph. Telekom
used Kris Lang and Serkan Erdogan to get going in the first quarter. Erdogan hit back-to-back three pointers to help the hosts
take a 24-22 lead after 10 minutes. Fener had Damir Mrsic, Marques Green and Gordan Giricek reply in the second period to
balance the game, but Erdogan was too hot for them. The experienced shooter scored the last 4 points for Telekom to give his
team a 45-40 advantage as they headed to the locker rooms.
It was a defensive third period, unlike the first two, as the teams both struggled to score.
A Lang slam after nearly four minutes gave Telekom its first double-digit lead, but Fener responded with a 0-8 spurt thanks
to Gordan Giricek and Rasim Basak and was soon back in the game. However Tutku Acik's skillful layup over Oguz Savas ended
the third quarter at 57-54 for the Ankara side.
Rod Blakney heated up with six points in a row extended to go ahead 71-63. Fenerbahce didn't
give up and came back to within 2 on a Savas layup with 2:11 remaining. A Blakney jumper with 39 seconds left made it 78-71
and seemed to ice the win. However Green came through with a pair of long triples to keep Fener down just 79-77 with 23 seconds
to go. But after couple of Fenerbahce turnovers, Blakney free throws ended the game at 83-79 and Telekom’s new captain
Tutku Acik took the cup from the hands of President Gul.
Erdogan led Telekom with 20 points and 4 assists, Lang had 14 points plus 9 boards, Blakney
scored 14 and added 3 assists , Acik had 11 points and Dudley had 9 points and 13 boards
for his team. Green scored 21 points on 5-of-6 three-point shooting plus 3 assists, Giricek added 18 points, Savas scored
12 and Mrsic 11 for Fenerbahce Ulker.
